Destiny Updates Guardian Games Score To Ignore ‘Cheese’

Bungie responds to Destiny 2 players’ frustrations regarding the ongoing Guardian Games by fixing a ‘cheese’ tied to reviving teammates.

From May 3rd to May 24th, Bungie is hosting the limited-time Guardian Games event at destination 2. In the Guardian Games, destination 2 players are pitted against opponents of different classes in the game. Not only does the winning class receive a statue in the tower, but individuals can earn exclusive rewards, including an emblem for just the top 10% players. Nonetheless, destination 2 players have become frustrated with a cheese that is skewing the Guardian Games leaderboards.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

There is good news and bad news about the Guardian Games. The good news is that Bungie is taking steps to combat the Guardian Games cheese affecting leaderboards. In a recently posted message from BungieHelp’s customer service Twitter account, Bungie confirmed that the 10% pair used for the emblem reward will ignore higher scores achieved through reviving team members. This should mean that the legitimate 10% of the best Guardian Games players will earn the emblem as intended.

The bad news is that Bungie also appears to be saying that those who celebrate the Guardian Games with revives will not be actively punished. The change it’s making isn’t taking points away from players who played cheese, even though Bungie can apparently track that information. It’s just changing the “even” number used to calculate the 10% bar. This means that both the top 10% of players who are earning their score legitimately and those rooting for the Guardian Games will be able to win the prize.

What Bungie isn’t acknowledging is that the problem with Guardian Games is twofold. It’s not just that the scores have been skewed by those scoffing at the game mode. It’s also that playing with teams that are making fun of the game mode is not fun. This change will fix the first issue, but will likely only encourage players to keep doing the second.

Unfortunately, Bungie is in a troubled situation. The crux of the matter, what ultimately matters more than anything else, is that this is all an emblem. How much focus should Bungie really put on an emblem? Is it really worth dedicating development resources to rebalancing the Guardian Games score without reviving? worth banning destination 2 players for this cheese? The answer Bungie has decided is no, not really.

It’s not necessarily fair that those who exploit the Guardian Games score are rewarded, but the prize is just a badge. Players who really want and deserve it will still be able to earn it. Bungie can focus on other development priorities and then balance Guardian Games once it’s done. It’s not an ideal solution, but it’s workable and sometimes it’s the best that can be managed with a live service game like destination 2.

destination 2 is now available for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
