What is Dead Space about? Gameplay, Story, Remake, & more!

Dead Space is a science fiction survival horror title published by Electronic Arts. It follows the gruesome story of system engineer Isaac Clark and his fight against markers and their horrible necromorphs. In addition to the three main entries, the series has produced numerous spin-off games, a novel, comics and two live-video films.

What sets Dead Space apart from other survival horror titles is its powerful industrial science fiction setting and the way Isaac was forced to deal with enemies. Up to this point, gamers were accustomed to shooting headshots to send zombies and similar monsters. For Dead Space, players have to smash enemies into pieces so that they can resurrect and return. It was a visceral experience where the horrific violence emphasized the horrors of desolate places.

It has integrated HUD in an incredibly unique way. Isaac’s life and stasis power were tracked through his suit gauge. Maps and inventory screens were guesses that were controlled by the suite. It made for a very cinematic experience because that fourth wall of the player was never broken.

While in space, Dead Space has also made great use of zero gravity situations and introduced kinesis. Kinesis allows Isaac to manipulate game objects as if he were using force. This has created an enjoyable puzzle and added another level to the battle.

Dead Space History

Dead place

Released in 2008 and developed by EA Redwood Shores, Original Dead Space was a landmark for the surviving horror genre. After receiving a distress call from USG Ishimura, where his girlfriend is staying, Isaac Clark is part of a crew sent to find out what happened and provide assistance.

However, upon arrival at the ship, they see that most of the crew have been brutally killed and that Ishimura is crouching and crawling with ferocious monsters. Stuck on the ship, Isaac needs to repair various systems, find a way to stop Unitologist Cult from spreading the plague and escape with his life.

Dead Space 2

After destroying the Red Marker in the first title, Isaac was captured by EarthGov and sent to a space station for bad reason. Now mentally disturbed after surviving USG Ishimura, Isaac is forced by unitologists to make a copy of the marker that infiltrated the organization.

As the markers became active, the space station’s population began to turn into necromorphs. Isaac must fight his way through a group of enemies and deal with his own hallucinations in order to destroy his creation. On the way, he encounters another surviving Eli Langford and the two are able to escape.

Dead Space 2 was developed by Visaral Games, released in 2011, and features a multiplayer mode in which players fight against each other. One side would take on the role of survivors who needed to accomplish a random purpose while the other was the necromorphs who were uniquely skilled at killing all survivors.

Dead place 3

Dead Space 3 was where the wheel stopped for the series and eventually it was destructively spelled out. Developed again by Visaral Games, EA pressured the studio to chase the trend of cover-based shooters at the time. Dead Space 3 lost a lot of the horror that made it so popular, made the game collaborative, added micro-transactions, and made it into an action shooter.

Several years after the Dead Space 2 incident, Eli and Isaac are devastated by the deterioration of their mental state. Unitologists have activated another marker near the colony where Isaac now lives and wants to kidnap the engineer. She escapes with the help of Eli and her new boyfriend, who leads a group of Arthugov soldiers.

From there, they set out for Tau Voltanis in search of the source of the markers. Joined by John Carver, Isaac and Crew, the system has several moons that are actually the ultimate form of necromorphic life. Unfortunately, the moon has risen and begun to make its way to Earth. In a desperate attempt to stop them, Isaac and Carver are trapped by a moon, leaving their fate unknown.

Remake

Instead of continuing a story with a decade-long gap, EA has decided to bring Motive Studios on board to remake the original title. Set for release on January 27, 2023, the remake uses the Frostbite engine to give USG Ishimura a complete visual overhaul. The title has seemed a bit unfocused in recent episodes. While it’s frustrating we probably won’t see a conclusion to the original story, it’s nice to see Dead Space return in the end.
