Legendary Armaments from Elden Ring
The Godslayer Greatsword is one of the coolest legendary weapons in the Elden Ring, a giant spiral sword that can imbue itself with black flames. It is very similar to the Onyx Blade from the Ashes of Ariandel DLC from Dark Souls 3, and even has the same animation, where your character lowers his sword to envelop it in dark, deadly flames.
While not as difficult to obtain as the Ruin Greatsword or the Golden Order Greatsword, this weapon still requires you to go to a secret location, navigate through it, and fight an Elden Ring boss that can be a little challenging on your own.
That said, if you want to get your hands on this legendary Elden Ring weapon, read on as I walk you through where it is and how to beat the dreaded Godskin Apostle boss guarding it.
Elden Ring Godslayer Greatsword Location
The Godslayer Greatsword is found in the basement of Caelid’s Divine Tower, located in the northern part of Caelid, near the place of grace of Dragonbarrow West. You’ll have to climb the tower to an entrance, then all the way back once inside, so get ready for the kind of “is this where I should jump next?” platform usually reserved for a Destiny attack. I got to this mini-dungeon around level 90, and I wouldn’t recommend tackling it before level 70, or even 60 at the very least.
From the tree roots that extend from the mainland to the tower, you can see two stairs, one with an enemy next to it. It’s best to deal with ranged opponents here to avoid the risk of falling. Follow the root to the outcrop in the tower, the lower of the two stairs, and go up.
Do not climb the second ladder immediately after the first. Instead, use Torrent to double-jump through the opening in the arched path to the right. Climb the ladder at the end of this path instead.
Proceed left from the top of the stairs and follow the path around the tower. Use Torrent’s double jump to cross any gaps, being cautious as there are some that are hard to see coming. You’ll find a free spot at the end of the path.
The stairs north of the place of grace lead to the activation point for the Great Rune of Radahn. For the Godslayer’s Greatsword, turn south and go down the stairs.. Watch out for two Redmane soldiers at the bottom, one hiding in the corner.
What follows is a FromSoft staple almost as iconic as Miyazaki’s love of poison swamps: the old “fall from ledge to ledge making its way to the bottom of a big pit” set. (See also: Great Hollow, Majula and Hunter’s Workshop). The path is quite simple: your first objective is the cage elevator with a Redmane soldier guarding it, which is down and to the left of your starting point. Cracked support in your path will break under your weight, but it’s a scripted event so you won’t take damage from the fall and this is the path you need to take.
Take the elevator and follow the corridor around the tower. Take a detour up the stairs and open the door at the top – it’s a shortcut back to the last location for free. There is a black flame monk further down the hall with ample balance and harmful incantations, but he must not pose also too much threat.
At the end of the hallway, jump onto the ledge to your left and keep following the curve around the tower until you’re directly above another cracked support. Like the first it will break and you are programmed to survive – there is no other way to the bottom of the tower – but I had a glitch and the fall killed me twice before it did no damage a third time. If this happens to you, keep going back down the shortcut and trying to jump until you land safely next to the elevator. Go down to another free spot and passing another black flame monk you will find the boss door to the Godskin Apostle.
Most of the Apostle’s attacks are fairly well telegraphed, and it shouldn’t take too many tries to get into his groove. A sticking point for me was an attack where he quickly spins his blade in front of him like an industrial fan, holding it there and walking forward to deal massive damage. I was never able to get behind him during this attack, and it’s safer to keep your distance until it’s over. Be careful when healing too – the Godskin Apostle shoots a black flame projectile at you when you try to drink from his flask.
Her second phase will feature some elastic Reed Richards antics, but they don’t mix up the fighting as much as, say, Margit’s Phase 2 moves. After defeating the Godskin Apostle, you’ll receive his nasty looking armor, and a chest in the next room contains the Godslayer’s Greatsword.
Elden Ring Godslayer Greatsword: Stats and Abilities
The Godslayer’s Greatsword’s War Ashes are “The Queen’s Black Flame”: a two-hit combo of attacks charged with black flame. Its requirements are as follows:
- Strength: You will need 20 Str to wield the Godslayer’s Greatsword one-handed, 14 for two hands. The Godslayer’s Greatsword only has a D scale in Strength, oddly enough for a Colossal Sword in this game.
- Dexterity: You’ll need 22 Dex, with the sword’s D scale improving to C at +2 and B at +10.
- Faith: The Godslayer’s Greatsword requires 20 Faith to wield, with D scale improving to C at +7.
- Stamina: While lighter than other Colossal Swords, you’ll still need a fair amount of Stamina to perform the Godslayer Greatsword’s full combo and roll quickly with it and heavier armor equipped.
